North Midlands @ Belvoir Game Fair

(July 18, 2009)

North Midlands Region were invited to organise a display at the Country Landowners’ Association Game Fair held at Belvoir Castle by kind permission of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland. The focus was on the special equipment needed to help riders with different disabilities achieve their dreams. Items of special equipment were demonstrated in the Hooked on Horses ring, twice each day, with the help of volunteers from the audience who were temporarily bandaged to simulate different disabilities and then challenged to steer our human horse. A lively commentary given by Claire Sheardown, Lincs County Chairman captivated audience interest.

RDA volunteers demonstrated their resourcefulness when the marquee erected by Claire and Lesley on Wednesday, was found to be in pieces on Thursday evening, a victim of the weather, and what’s more someone else had taken our plot. Not daunted in a crisis, and helped by the G&T, Plan B was hastily thought up and swung into action. With the timely help of Bill from Altitude Access who had arrived with Winifred to deliver the EasiMount lift and George the "horse", Claire unearthed her stored caravan and Bill towed it onto site as dusk was falling. We staked our claim and with the aid of torches, Claire, Lesley, Winifred and Bill set up the caravan and with a few false starts [because no-one knew what the finished result should look like] erected the awning. A very early start on Friday morning produced this result....

Over three very long days, we attracted a varied audience, and one distinguished visitor who was happy to try out the EasiMount lift complete with mobility scooter.

This turned out to be The Marquess of Hertford of Ragley Hall, Warwickshire, who will be hosting the Game Fair next year. He very kindly gave permission to use the photos for promotion.
